Tapping Accessories

Thread cutting, or tapping, is the process of creating internal threads inside a drilled hole using a tool called a tap. It enables bolts or screws to be fastened securely into metal components. In drilling machines designed for tapping, precision and tool safety are crucial. This is where tapping adapters and tapping inserts become important. A tapping adapter holds the tap securely while allowing axial movement and torque control, preventing breakage. Tapping inserts ensure the tap aligns perfectly with the hole. Together, they compensate for minor misalignments, absorb overloads, and ensure smooth, accurate, and damage-free thread production in metal.

A quick-change tapping chuck is an essential accessory for magnetic drilling machines used for thread cutting. It enables fast, precise and safe tool changes without the need to re-align or re-center the machine, significantly reducing setup time and increasing productivity. The quick-change chuck is designed for use with GSE tapping inserts (with safety slip clutch) and GSS tapping inserts (without slip clutch). This makes it suitable for both through holes and blind hole tapping, depending on the safety and torque requirements.

To ensure compatibility with different spindle types, the chuck is available in
Morse Taper sizes MT 2, MT 3 and MT 4. The available models are:

• GSW 222 – Size 2 – MT 2
• GSW 331 (Size 1), GSW 332 (Size 2), GSW 333 (Size 3) – MT 3
• GSW 442 (Size 2), GSW 443 (Size 3), GSW 444 (Size 4) – MT 4

Standard tapping inserts are used for tapping through holes where the tap can pass completely through the material. These inserts do not include a safety slip clutch, allowing direct torque transmission from the machine to the tap, making them ideal for uninterrupted thread cutting. They are available for a wide range of thread sizes from M5 to M30, covering both small and large industrial tapping requirements. When combined with a quick-change tapping chuck, these inserts enable fast tool changes, precise alignment and efficient tapping performance
on magnetic drilling machines.

Tapping inserts with a safety friction clutch are designed to protect both the tap and the magnetic drilling machine during thread cutting. They are available for tap sizes from M5 to M42, and can be used for both through holes and blind holes.

The integrated friction clutch limits the torque transferred to the tap. When tapping a blind hole, if the tap reaches the bottom or encounters excessive resistance, the clutch slips. This prevents tap breakage, spindle damage or thread deformation. It also compensates for minor misalignment and axial tension, ensuring smoother and safer tapping, especially in brittle or hard materials.
